A guide for you. A brochure for your patient.
Organised by condition so you can find the right PDF during the consult, not after it. Open access — no registration, no email required.
Knee osteoarthritis
Refer when pain limits sleep, walking distance or work despite conservative care — or when the patient wants to understand options before deciding.
Hip osteoarthritis
Groin pain on weight-bearing, stiffness putting on shoes and socks, night pain — radiographs often lag symptoms.
The higher-weight patient
Patients told elsewhere that a number rules them out. Eligibility is assessed individually — 3D planning, wound-management technique, nutritional optimisation and, for hips, the direct anterior approach all form part of that assessment.
Painful existing joint replacement
Pain, stiffness, instability or a joint that has never felt right — a redo is not the only answer, and often not the answer.
Second opinion
For patients uncertain before committing to surgery, or unhappy after surgery done elsewhere. No obligation to proceed, and the referrer is kept in the loop either way.
Imaging before referral
Which study answers which question — and which ones can wait until after the consultation.
Clinician resource — no patient handout for this topic.
Perioperative medication & optimisation
Anticoagulation, diabetes, smoking, iron studies and dental review — the items that most often delay a list.
Clinician resource — no patient handout for this topic.
After joint replacement: what GPs see
Wound appearance, expected swelling, stiffness timelines, and the findings that warrant a call rather than a wait.
Clinician resource — no patient handout for this topic.
Cortisone & joint injections
What an injection is reasonable to try, what it tells you diagnostically, how often is too often, and when repeated injections are delaying a decision rather than deferring one.
After knee surgery: patient handouts
The brochures patients are given at discharge — downloadable here so you can reissue one in your own consult.
No GP guide for this row — the patient handouts are the resource here.

Six GP guides are in production. One short email when each goes live — nothing else.
